Every year in Switzerland, 9,000 accidents occur involving a fall from height. 22 get killed, 330 remain with accident caused disabilities

Suva (Swiss Accident Insurance Fund), the Swiss Rigging Association (SHRV) ), and the Swiss Mountain Guide Association (SBV) came together in 2009 and 2010 to develop a fall-protection training concept along with the basic resources, in order to simplify and standardize safety training for employers and employees alike.

Suspension trauma is a potentially life-threatening condition due to limitation of blood flow in the body after hanging vertically for an extended period of time, for example in a fall harness.

Because of this risk, it has been internationally determined that a fall victim must be pulled up within 10-20 min., with the equipment on site.

This timeframe can usually only be achieved when a rescue plan is thoroughly taken into consideration before work on the site begins.

Although there have been multiple deadly accidents worldwide involving suspension trauma, there are no official statistics due to the rare occurrence of these accidents.

But the facts remain:

  1. Only a few minutes hanging in a harness can be torture for an injured person --> àTry it out yourself.
  2. The risk of sustaining an open wound in such a situation is usually quite high.
    The risk of bleeding to death is just as high as that of suffering from suspension trauma.

Therefore: rescue scenarios should be discussed and practiced before work begins.

The necessary fall zone has to be taken into consideration while working with fall protection equipment, regardless of the situation.

Impact during an accidental fall must be prevented!

The required fall zone can have a radius between .5 and 10 meters, depending on the system components and placement of the anchors.

The important factors are:

  1. Placement of the anchors (directly above the worker, and above head height wherever possible)
  2. Total length of the ropes
  3. Dynamic stretching of the ropes.
    For example: the dynamic pull of a EN1891 rope is 5%!
    A wet rope can stretch up to 1.5x more than a dry rope!
  4. Extension of shock absorbers
    = the effective, fall dependent, extension length
    → A lower fall height will only extend the absorber a fraction of the distance
    →A specialist should be able to calculate the correct extension length
  5. Stretching of the harness
  6. Distance between the attachment point on the harness and the workers shoes
  7. A safety reserve of 1m

    Arbeiten mit PSAgA dürfen nur durch nachweislich ausgebildetes und der Situation angepasst ausgerüstetem Personal ausgeführt werden (VUV 5 & 8).

    Die Rettung ist dabei jederzeit durch eigene Mittel der Baustelle sicherzustellen.

    Leider gab es bis anhin noch riesige Unterschiede bezüglich Inhalte und Dauer von Schulungen für PSAgA.
    Schulungen von 30 Minuten Dauer und 15 Teilnehmer waren keine Seltenheit.

    Die Ursachen hierfür sind vielfältig und können sowohl beim Auftraggeber (Firma) wie auch beim Schulungsanbieter liegen.
